THE GABION PLAN - a Plan that works to stop flood waters. Fast, mobile, strong, tall, temporary

In Part 1 we spoke about Gabions and there need to stop the storm surge . Now lets talk about the plan. This  scenario is for a 5 mile beach area.   http://temporary-flood-barriers-gabions.weebly.com/ EQUIPMENT and STORAGE NEEDED: 1.AUTO CARRIER SHIPS for Transporting the Gabions To complete this SEALIFT operation in a timely manner you will need a ROLL ON/ROLL OFF Operation which requires auto carrier ships.  The SEALIFT Operation would be required to save the area from destruction from the storm surge. THE SEALIFT Operation would transport the trailers with gabions to the  shore communities in danger. The gabions are a temporary barrier. We need ships that are FAST, STRONG, and have HIGH CAPACITY for RORO Operation. USE THE LOCAL BARGES and TUGBOATS 1B. USE LONG BARGES TO  CARRY THE  TRUCK TRAILERS and GABIONS FROM THE STORAGE AREA TO THE FLOATING CAUSEWAY An example of pontoon barge that can be used for hauling trucks. 2. BARGE PLATFORMS  FOR TRANSPORTING  THE TRAILERS and GABIONS In order to transport the trailers with  gabions we will need to treat this operation like a MILITARY SEALIFT. It's an emergency operation to protect our coast line from total destruction from the storm surge. The United States Navy  uses a FLOATING CAUSEWAY system to transport cargo during a SEALIFT. The floating CAUSEAWAY  can be made into different sizes. Its strong enough to carry the trailers on/off the ship. YOU NEED TO SUCCESSFULLY UNLOAD THE TRAILERS with GABIONS  OUT AT SEA ONTO THE CAUSEWAY. RORO Operation out at sea. THE shoreline does not permit the bigger ships to dock close to the beaches. You will have to be at least a mile off the coast. The causeway can be a mile long in length. Its  basically a floating pontoon of barges SEA OFFLOADING OPERATION. ROLLER TRAILERS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR HOLDING THE GABIONS STACKING OF  CARGO TRAILERS STACKING OF GABIONS REMEMBER THIS TEMPORARY STORM SURGE BARRIER  THAT MUST BE ROLLED ON/ ROLL OFF SHIP IN A TIMELY MANNER. Terminal  RO/RO Trailers will be used for holding the Gabions Terminal Trailers Have Many Different Sizes. Standard size Roller Trailer . 40 foot trailer with 100 ton capacity WEIGHTS AND MEASURES 1 GABION = 10,368 lbs THE TRAILER is 40 FOOT  LENGTH EACH GABION IS 12 FEET LONG Room 3 gabions across on the trailer (4 foot space) (YOU WILL NEED TO FILL IN THE 4 FOOT SPACE On the trailer). The gabions could be loaded on the ship. A very long floating causeway would be needed from the ship to the shoreline. Say the ship is one mile from the beach. The barge platforms can be used to unload the gabions. navypier-bmp_(1) Barges are essential with the roll on/roll off operation. The New York-New Jersey area  has plenty of barges available for this operation.  No problem. You need to create a 1 mile long barge platform for the forklift truck to carry the gabions to the beach.

Private-sector ships in the area. An auto carrier ship would work well for this emergency operation. The auto carrier ship is designed for fast roll on/roll off operations. There are plenty of auto carrier ships that sail into the New York annbsp; d New Jersey area that have large capacity for  their daily operations. The question  remains - can New York and New Jersey get the Auto Carrier Shipping Company(s) to agree to help out during an emergency SEALIFT operation ? This requires the auto carrier ship to carry the trailers and gabions. This requires the auto carrier to perform a Roll on /roll off operation with the trailer and gabions only out at sea. Remember the ship doors would be open onto a floating causeway  out a sea not the loading dock. It would be like the US Navy operation in this photo. But would the private sector auto carriers help out in such a operation? No guarantee       Does anybody want give this GABION PLAN a try .....that is if a Monster Storm Surge was about to hit New York and New Jersey? After all, Hurricane Sandy was the second costliest hurricane in US history at $76 billion dollars It is a decent defensive plan to protect the shoreline in a 24 hour time period from the storm surge. Its a temporary surge barrier, not permanent. It's a matter time, energy, and investing in resources to protect the coastline.  Think about it. TEAMWORK Instead of transporting cars the Auto Carrier would be transporting pre-filled Gabions on trailer to defend the shoreline from the storm surge. It works. THAT's THE SEALIFT PLAN. THE GABIONS WORK VERY AGAINST THE STORM SURGE.                                                                                 THE BACKSIDE OF THE GABION WILL NEED TO REST AGAINST  SAND   DUNE (see below) The beach area needs to have a 16 foot sand dune ready for each gabion section. See the photo above of the sand dune. Gabions work very well with hills of sand or dirt. The backside must be secure with SAND. The front of the Gabion will be absorbing the storm surge. TIMING IS EVERYTHING. THE 5 mile Gabion Wall Must Be Built in 24 Hour Period To Defend A Community from the Storm Surge During A Major Hurricane. TEAMWORK The Heavy-Duty equipment is out there in the world to make this Emergency Beach Plan work in a 24 hour time period. Look at the huge construction projects taking place in Manhattan. There is a large fleet of construction vehicles right here in the New York and New Jersey area....... Lets put this construction equipment to work to save our Metro area when it is needed to stop a monster storm surge from destroying the local area.......... Its time to talk to the construction contractors and ask if they can help out with this Emergency GABION Plan for the shore communities. Its a matter of time, effort, and investing some money in community resources,  in order to project the community from the storm surge. 3. WAREHOUSE TO HOLD THE 16,000 GABIONS, TRAILERS and FORK LIFTS We need a place to store the gabions. There not staying on the beach. Temporary on the beach. Used only during a hurricanes or nor'easter to battle storm sturge. This has to be a systematic emergency operation getting the Gabions stacked on the beach and then placed back in the warehouse once it is done. All this must be done in 24 hour time period. You manage to maintain the surf at the beach. It's not a permanent flood-barrier like New Bedford............. # 3. You manage to protect the businesses, homes, and civic/community centers near the shoreline from the storm surge. You also manage to reduce the claims cases filed by property owners, keeping the insurance companies happy..............
Not all shore residents need the Hurricane Sandy federal buyout program. Nor do the shore residents of New York and New Jersey need to leave their communities. Bottom-line. Protect the coast with temporary pre-filled gabions. It works. The Europeans use gabions to stop major flooding in their communities. It works. Remember, it’s more durable and stronger then sand. The Europeans have the edge in flood control methods in protecting their towns from storm surge. As Americans we need to learn how stop the storm surge from destroying our communities. Gabions work!
With a strong effort from the community and time well invested you don't need to buyout homes, buyout businesses, and can still protect your community resources. TEAMWORK!
HEY FOLKS - let’s all relax and think about the logic behind all of this. First they tell the local builders to construct homes near the coast and now they want residents to leave and trying to buy them out in New York and New Jersey. It's true.
Let’s talk about rebuilding our communities and defending the coast. There is no need for the lifelong residents to leave their communities. Stay and rebuild. Think about this. Why not invest in a major capital project for the coastal defense of New York and New Jersey? Having permanent flood barriers between Sandy Hook and the Rockaways would certainly be a wise investment for our coastal defenses. Think about it.
Right now, there is NO major flood barrier projects planned to defend the coastal line.
Instead we hear all this talk about the federal buyout plan. The objective is to get some coastal residents to move out and not rebuild within certain areas of community. They should stay and rebuild. Remember, it’ their community. They deserve to stay and rebuild. Think about this.

As a community - you want save the tax-payers money across America. Buyouts cost taxpayer’s big money. As a community - you want maintain your tax base and NOT lose your coastal population. Buyouts will force you to lose the community tax base. New Orleans received the proper coastal defenses to stop the storm surge. New Orleans now has a world class flood barrier system capable of protecting the City from a Category 5 storm surge. New York and New Jersey have yet to see a serious capital project plan to stop the storm surge. Remember, New York City is a world class international city on the map. London has flood barriers, not New York City. New Orleans has flood barriers, not New York City. NYC is the financial capitol of America, yet there are no flood barriers in place to stop the flood waters from entering the City. New Bedford, Massachusetts found an inexpensive way to defend their coastline from the storm surge.

Remember, the Gabions would have to be placed directly in the area close to the storm surge. That means near the coastline, along the roads directly near the shoreline, and directly in front of the boardwalks. The objective to create a temporary tight flood barrier that will stop the storm surge from destroying the community.

Look at the map and videos below. This will give you a general idea of the areas that need Pre-filled Gabions.  The Pre-filled Gabions definitely could have protected these communities from the storm surge in many of these areas along the coastline of New York and New Jersey.

TEAMWORK - In A 24 Hour period a 16 foot high Gabion wall (2 deep) can be constructed spanning 5 miles.  Remember, the goal is have a temporary flood barrier strong enough to stop the storm surge from destroying the entire community.
It’s worth the time and effort and when you consider Hurricane Sandy storm surge was the 2nd costliest storm in US history. $75 Billion Dollars in Damages.  The New York - New Jersey   coastline had very little defense to stop this monster storm surge from Hurricane Sandy.
